President party
I'm late to the party on this one ...
I still think Darrell Hammond's portrayal of Bill Clinton is the best of the bunch.

Advice for Sasha and Malia
In case you missed it ...
NBC showed a moving bit today with a letter the Bush twins wrote to the Obama girls about living in the White House ...
I caught it on Today this morning and made a point to show it to Kates tonight ... It had us both in tears.

Can't Trust This Day
I was driving this morning to my favorite classic rock station -- and by that I mean music from the ’60s and ’70s -- when the station played Collective Soul’s “Shine” … From 1994.
Granted, I’ve noticed the station inserting a few more songs from artists and bands I ran with in high school, like REM and Tom Petty (without the Heartbreakers) and The Cranberries … I love all that music ...
But when they start referring to that stuff as classic rock … I know I’m getting older.
I was leaving our church tonight, having picked up Phoebe so Kates could run her children’s choir rehearsal …
The church lies along a narrow neighborhood street that’s almost always lined with cars on both streets …
As usual, I opened the car door in and bent inside to buckle in Phoebe, my legs clearly protruding onto the road …
When all of a sudden, I hear a car pull up alongside and the driver lays on its horn …
“Excuse me!” yells a young woman, who couldn’t have been more than 20 years old. “Can you shut your door!?”
A few more seconds and I would have had Phoebe buckled and moved out of the way. I duck out of the car and blurt out, “Can you hold on a second …”
But before I could say or do anything else, she was yelling a word that rhymes with ship and bulldozing her way through the street, barely missing me and my car door.
Today is George Bush’s last day in the Presidential office …
As we look back on the last eight years, I thought it was appropriate to post this bit that David Letterman did a while back …

Sunday Night Recording
(Updated 12.15.2008)
... Kates and I just finished watching the latest episode of our "Sunday Night 'Saturday Night Live.' "
... And I have to say ... Last night's SNL might have been the best all-around SNL I have seen in a long time. (Mo Ryan disagrees.) I had good, hearty laughs on multiple skits (Which I don't recall happening during the Tina-Fey-as-Sarah-Palin Era). I thoroughly enjoyed the entire show ...
From Jason Sudeikis playing the foul-mouthed Blago in the opening sketch, to the return of "Bronx Beat" to a Weekend Update that nearly had my side hurting ...
And this weekend we really did have to say good-bye to Amy Poehler ... I'm not sure if I missed something, but we swore she was done when she had her baby a few weeks ago. Then, she popped up on last week's show (HA-larious! by the way ...), and the word was that it was a one-time deal. Then, she popped up again last night -- and we cheered briefly that she might not be going away, only to watch her choked-up farewell at the end of Update ... We'll miss you Amy ...
In case you missed it, here's the opening sketch ... (And here's what Phil Rosenthal had to say about it. I get his point, and OK, the accent didn't work ... But I still thought SNL's take was funny ...)
Here's Weekend Update ... (Apparently people didn't like the take on David Paterson either. Again, I get their point ... But it's SNL. And it had my side hurting ...)
And while I'm at it, here's my favorite bit from last weekend's SNL -- Obama: Cool. (Kates and I were actually singing this around the house after we finished watching last weekend's show ...)
In other news tonight ...
Kates was putting Phoebe to bed as I caught this on the Nightly News ...
So amusing to watch I called Kates back to the living room ... and we watched it probably three or four more times ...

And Fred Armisen's bit with the interactive map was ha-larious!

When I put my contacts in this morning, I knew immediately something wasn't right. And when I went back to the bathroom to try adjusting them, I didn't do much good ... Nevertheless, I pressed on, and Kates and I attended church, even though I was having so much trouble seeing out of my right eye I could barely make out the words in the hymnal ...
I tried adjusting them once more after we got home. But now the contact in my right eye was stuck to my eyeball -- I thought. I must've dumped almost half a bottle of saline solution on my eye to try getting it out, but nothing seemed to work. Ok, that can happen, I thought, I'll just try to get through the rest of the afternoon and hope it dries out enough that it just falls out ...
So we went ice skating ... And once we returned home again, I was back at it, trying to get that contact out of my right eye. I tried more saline solution. More rubbing my eye ... By the time Kates and I ate supper tonight, I was in such inexplicable pain and agony. I had practically gouged my eye ...
Only to realize at about 8:30 tonight that the contact lense I had been trying to fix all day was never in my eye ...
Oh, the pain and suffering.
Here's some of the good reads that piqued my interest during the last week ...
Sports ...
a Wrigley Field would get new neighbors under developer's proposal for hotel, apartments ... ugh.
a Lets stop pretending Wrigleyville is perfect ... I think this guy is a Sox fan.

a Billary's Adventures in Primaryland ... and more.
a The politics of personality: Do you like these people?
a Transformer candidates: It's amazing to watch the presidential contenders bend and twist into whatever they need to be

a Garth Brooks is almost the retiring sort
a Grammy-nominated videos include Feist, Johnny Cash ... The Feist video and Mute Math's "Typical" are by far the videos of the year ...
a Marketers announce ad lineup for Super Bowl
a Marketers going all out to make impression on Super Bowl audience
a NBC's new `Lipstick Jungle' similar to ABC's `Cashmere Mafia,' but neither series measures up ... Too bad. And yet, not surprising. We're still watching "Mafia," but it's starting to wear thin ...
a Ritter's family says he didn't have to die ... very interesting.
a Southern-bred actress has field day with role of devious co-worker ... Angela Kinsey rocks.

a University of Wisconsin, Washburn wrangling in court over ‘W’ logos ... Ah yes. The good 'ol Washburn 'W'. See Washburn is a rival of Northwest, and it struck me every time we played them how similar Washburn's 'W' looked to Wisconsin's 'W.' ... Not that I think the school needs to get sued over it, but it is interesting ...

a It's a holiday tune full of pure joy ... I remember the first time I heard this song too. December 1994. I was a sophomore in high school, getting ready to head to my job as a grocery clerk at the local Price Chopper. I was listening to my stereo in my room -- as usual. I started bouncing around my room, and I thought then that it was one of the greatest song's I'd ever heard ... Yeah. Here's the video.

A likely conversation between some of our neighbors this afternoon as they watched me in our front yard ...
(Imagine an honory elderly woman)
Yes. Our front yard now looks, for lack of a better term, a little retarded.
See, I spent most of yesterday planting nearly 100 bulbs in our front and back gardens. But we also have some of the boldest and brash squirrels you've ever known in our neighborhood, a learned trait I attribute mostly to one of our neighbors who feeds the little pests ... These squirrels, which are black by the way, have proceeded to bury food, dig up and wreak havoc on much of what I've planted all summer long. And today, I came outside to finds holes, like an expired mine field, throughout the areas I'd planted.
So I declared war.
Today, I finished planting the bulbs I had left, and tried replanting the ones I found scattered. Covered the areas with a wire mesh. And then doused everything with Critter Ridder ...
Got a lot of funny looks from people passing by (including one elderly woman who, after I explained what I was doing, said she's had the same problems in her yard and has given up her fight -- but she jubiliantly wished me luck and said she'd try to scare them off for me whenever she walked by ...), but at this point I'm desperate.

Harold, look across the street! That man's spreading chicken wire all over his flower beds. What is he doing that for!?(A little while later ...)
Now's he's spraying something too! What's in Sam's name is he doing over there!? He's ruining his yard!
