Hillary Clinton To Nation ...

So Hillary Clinton is back in politics and running for president in 2016. And The Onion captured it hilariously.
... make no mistake, I’m not f***ing around. Got it?” Clinton then ended her announcement by vowing to fight for a better future for all working-class families like the one she grew up in.

... I visited a local ski mountain for a story this afternoon. I sooo want to go skiing now ...

Tonight, I arrived home in time to catch a bit of the American Music Awards -- that Beyonce can dance! -- before I got sucked into the "JFK: Breaking the News" documentary on PBS. Even though I saw it last year, once I started watching tonight I absolutely could not pull myself away ...

Oh, and this just in, I think Oklahoma scored a few more touchdowns on Texas Tech ... Holy cow, that was a thrashing last night ...

Here's some of the reads that caught my attention during the last week ...

Sarah Palin Live!

... So Kates and I just got done watching last night's Saturday Night Live premiere ...

... Kates and I were at a wedding yesterday and last night (... This one was for one of many cousins. Always great fun with the family ...) ...We returned home in plenty of time to catch the show live, but we were terribly exhausted. So we decided to let the DVR do the work and we caught the recording this afternoon ...

... But let's back up a little ... Kates and I had been waiting for this premiere for weeks. Who wasn't -- given SNL's dream team cast for this fall's elections. Granted, I've only been a fan watching SNL since the late '90s, but based on the clips I've seen of older shows, I'm not sure SNL has ever had a group who perfectly plays the day's political characters as well as this current cast ...

And with that in mind Kates and I have eagerly waited for weeks to see who would take on the Sarah Palin role ... The obvious choice was Sarah Palin look-a-like and SNL alum Tina Fey. Kates argued no one else could play Palin, while I figured it'd be too hard for SNL to bring Fey back for the fall and the show would have to settle on Kristin Wiig as Palin ...

... So when we got home last night, despite our exhaustion, the excitement level was, shall we say -- palin-pable.

Kates and I couldn't not at least watch the opening skit ...

And there, lo and behold, was Tina Fey as Sarah Palin and Amy Poehler doing her classic Hillary Clinton -- and the real Sarah Palin was watching!. Barely a few seconds in Kates and I were clapping hands in the air and loving it ... Tina Fey hit Palin dead-on. The exaggerrated northern American accent also was a nice touch. And by the end, Kates and I were laughing so hard or sides were hurting ...

We can only hope Fey stays with SNL through the election to do more Palin-isms ...

Watching the rest of the show today wasn't nearly as fun. But that was expected ...

I didn't have high expectations for Michael Phelps ... Although I was super-pleased to see Fred Armisen do his Nicholas Fehn character, which has to be one of my favorite SNL characters of the last few years ... I had been thinking going into last night's show how good it would be to see Armisen do Nicholas Fehn again ...

In case you missed the opening Sarah Palin-Hillary Clinton sketch ...

Sunday reading

The story of this weekend: the weather.

I arrived home from work Friday afternoon to bright sunny skies, thick muggy air -- and the sound of tornado sirens. Kates, Phoebe and I held out for about an hour in the basement and waited for the warning to expire ... Then I went outside, mowed the lawn and puttered in the yard until a pouring rain forced me back inside ...

Yesterday, we were out on the town for the annual downtown and kite festivals. It was another bright sunny day ... Phoebe loved getting pushed around in her shoulder. We met friends. Listened to live music. Shopped the deals. Ate ice cream -- it was won-der-ful ... Then we had barely arrived home and the storms rolled in again. And more tornado sirens.

Today. We went to church ... and then watched it pour for most of the afternoon. The sun came out for the latter part of the afternoon, giving us time to visit a graduation pary and for me to do some more puttering in the yard. Tonight, Kates and I got Phoebe to bed and waited for Grandma -- she's staying with us for a couple days -- to arrive ...

Grandma had just arrived. Kates was helping her unpack. And I was settling in to watch what was left of tonight's Cubs-Dodgers game ... when a tornado warning appeared on the TV, and the sirens started sounding once more. We grabbed Phoebe out of her crib, and here we are in the basement again. Good thing its a homey basement ...

Hey, remember when we had a tornado in January? Those were fun times.

Here's my Sunday reads ...

Media ...
a History in Slow Motion ... A good read about the Democratic race. We raised our eyebrows too when the AP's message about Hillary conceding the nomination arrived -- only to be strung out the rest of the week before her official announcement -- which was pretty inspiring, I might add.

The Internet ...
a Sudden Disconnect Over Social Networking Deal ... Very interesting.
a The Top 10 Social Networking Annoyances ... a good one from my friend Raechel. I completely agree with No. 10 -- if it takes too long to load, I'm gone and never coming back.

History in the making

I watched Game One of the NBA Finals last night...

Celtics-Lakers, baby. Amazing. ... It's probably the first NBA game I've watched since Michael Jordan was in a Bulls uniform. I'm totally going to soak this one up and root for the Paul Pierce and the Celtics.

The TV ratings have got to be going through the roof for this series ...

* * *

... Watched Randy Johnson break No. 2 on the all-time strikeout list against the Brewers the other night. That was pretty cool ... Even cooler was seeing the Brewers pitcher get two hits off of him.

... The Cubs are looking -- dare I say it ... Like a good Cubs fans, I've faithfully stayed up late to watch their games on the west coast this week.

Until the Padres finally put 'em down on Wednesday night, the Cubs had won nine in a row -- and eight straight were stellar come-from-behind wins. My favorite of the week: Zambrano's performance on both sides of the ball on Monday night.

And there was this from the Chicago Tribune:

Seldom has a Cubs team been linked to so many of its predecessors as the 2008 edition has been during the first two months of the season.

Every day seems to bring about a new history lesson.Consider that the Cubs on Tuesday night were off to their best start since 1977, even before
Geovany Soto, Mark DeRosa and Alfonso Soriano homered in a 9-6 win over the Padres at Petco Park.

They've won nine straight for the first time since 2001, and entered June with the best record in baseball for the first time since 1908. They finished their first 7-0 homestand since 1970, and they've led in 25 consecutive games for the first time since 1935.

* * *

Barack Obama finally clinched the Democratic nomination. Thankfully ... I'm fully in his camp now and hoping the Hillary supporters will do the same for the sake of the party ...

Admittedly, our support was strong for Clinton when she swung through these parts over the winter, but it seemed to go totally down hill from there. And for the last couple months I didn't know what to think about her; watching her hang on to her campaign for dear life was woeful. But then again, I can understand and respect her reasons for not quitting ...

* * *

Speaking of Obama ... We got word this week that Chicago is still in the running for the 2016 Olympics. Sweet!

And how sweet would it be if Obama gets in the White House to give us a little pull?

It's not like we haven't been thinking about it already. We were already dreaming of it last year.

* * *
... I got two more Mountain Dews in one of my trips to the office soda machine this week ... I really should go to Vegas.

It's so cold and dreary here today, the weather people are predicting snow tomorrow ...

My ball team played a practice game today. We won 3-1, but our team was so cold and miserable, we convinced the other team to stop it after six innings. Plus, I struck out twice ... The season starts in less than a month, and I'm nowhere near the shape I should be in ...

And Phoebe did not give us a good night of sleep. So far, she's been an excellent sleeper, but not last night ... We also learned on Friday she's a few ounces underweight and we were told to bulk her up this weekend with a lot of feedings ...

Kates and I are feeling truly blessed today ...

Mom & Pops were here for the weekend to help us prepare more for Baby ...

All of today we were finding ourselves surrounded by people who have loved and supported us and played significant parts in our lives, people who have known both of us from the very beginning, some of our closest friends and family members ...

And tonight we had to say good-bye to a dear friend. As Kates' father said in his message, he was "the quintessential Milwaukeean." He was always there with a kind greeting or words of wisdom. He was a devoted baseball fan, too -- As the pallbearers carried away his casket tonight, we sang "Take Me Out To the Ball Game." Kates and I were blessed to have known him.

It's Oscar night ...

Yippee.

The only things I cared about were Jon Stewart's comedy and Diablo Cody winning the award for best original screenplay. Both played out just the way I'd hoped -- Stewart was funny and Cody won. But there were a few bonuses, too -- I loved Amy Adams singing the Happy Working Song (she was adorable!) and it also was great seeing Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova perform their song from "Once" ... And then winning for it! ... And then seeing Stewart bring Irglova back out to the microphone for a second chance at giving an acceptance speech!

All great moments.

Ba(ra)ck on 'SNL'

... So Kates has been sick all weekend, and because of it we skipped church this morning ...

And watched last night's "SNL."

HA-larious. An instant classic. Easily one of the top episodes od the year, along with the Brian Williams show.

With the news that Loren Michaels was auditioning cast members to play Barack Obama, we were beyond eager to see the results ...

And, boy, did Fred Armisen get it. The mannerisms. The slow speech. The curled eyebrows. ... Then combine that with Amy Poehler doing her Hillary Clinton impersonation, Kristin Wiig as Campbell Brown and the characters gushing over Obama -- the skit was brilliant ... (For the record, going in, I hadn't even thought of Armisen as a possible Obama ... But if he can pull it off as well as he did, who cares whether the impersonator is black. That's where SNL's amazing makeup team comes in.)

Combine that with the charm of seeing Tina Fey back with her SNL buds -- We couldn't have asked for a better return from the writer's strike ...

Tina Fey's opening monologue with Steve Martin emboldening her to be a performer was entertaining ...And her "Women's News" bit at the Weekend Update desk was seriously funny -- complete with a plug for Hillary Clinton ...

And that was after Mike Huckabee's wickedly funny appearance on Update... Huckabee showed off his comic chops and kudos to him for doing the bit ...

The Celebrity Apprentice. Andy Samberg as Mathew Lesko and Amy Poehler as the dancing guy from the Six Flags commercials -- HA-larious.

... Along with the "I Drink Your Milkshake Skit" -- complete with a Kenosha reference at the end. Nice.

Though I can't say I was impressed with new featured player Casey Wilson ... She's going to annoy me, I think.
