SNL: Katy & friends

So Katy Perry hosted Saturday Night Live over the weekend ...

Mostly, her performance was a disappointment.

My favorite skit proved to be a Weekend Update bit featuring Bill Hader playing Stefon ... I watched the show live on Saturday night, and the bit had me laughing out loud then. But when I played it for Kates tonight and thus saw it a second time, it had me laughing so hard my side hurt and I nearly fell to the ground.

My honorable mention for the episode goes to the Digital Short, featuring Matt Damon and Val Kilmer ...

SNL returns

Oh boy, were we looking forward  to the season premiere of "Saturday Night Live" last night. Amy Poehler hosting, Katy Perry performing -- throw in Sesamegate -- how could we not tune in!? (In case you missed it, check out Amy Poehler's hidden camera fun over the summer on Ellen.)

The opening monologue was stacked with talent and loaded with good bits ...

I loved -- loved -- that Poehler teamed up once more with Maya Rudolph for an episode of "Bronx Beat," one of my favorite running skits in recent years. And any viewer paying close attention to their Twitter feeds this week had to figure the minds of SNL were going to come up with a gag that spoofed Perry's "Sesame Street" performance. Perry visiting "Bronx Beat" in the Elmo shirt was genius ...

Weekend Update is never bad when Poehler is around, either. And an appearance by the actual David Patterson was pretty swell as well, although I would have been disappointed if Fred Armisen and Patterson hadn't popped up in front of the camera lens as Poehler was signing off -- which they did.

The show's biggest downfall, I thought, were Perry's musical performances. The background dancers were terribly distracting. Perry appeared uncomfortable and seemed off her game.

Good-bye Gokey

We've just watched Danny Gokey sing his stirring version of “You Are So Beautiful” …

And now the local Fox station is live from a house where Danny’s family and friends were gathered to watch the show …

How … Ha … Wha … What just happened?

After last night, I thought for sure that Danny was a shoo-in for the finale … Then once, Ryan announced Kris for the finale, my heart was really pumping. My mind was getting giddy at the possibility of watching the judges -- mainly Kara -- writhing in horror when Ryan announced it would be Danny in the final, and not their boy Adam

Instead, Kates and I just sat in stunned silence when Adam got the nod.

We had gotten caught up in the hometown hubbub over Danny and in recent days it seemed only right to be rooting for him … After all, we totally welled up when they played the montage of Danny’s day in Milwaukee.

Ah, well. Danny’s career is just beginning, I’m sure.

A couple other notes from tonight’s show …

Jordin Sparks’ performance rocked. No doubt we’ll be hearing “Battlefield” all over the radio within a couple weeks.

And Katy Perry. Always entertaining and colorful. And right up Adam Lambert’s glam alley.

Sunday reading

We got more snow this weekend ...

At least a foot, I'd say, which is a few inches more than the meteorologist I talked to Friday night said we were going to get ... At the pace it was falling yesterday, it took me almost three hours to clean our driveway and sidewalks, and then shovel the driveway again when the plow came by and stuffed it closed. The piles of snow in some places are literally up to my eyeballs ...

Phoebe appears to be feeling much better. It's no wonder; she also appears to have handed off her cough and cold to Kates and I ...

Which is perfect considering it's supposed to get really cold this week ...
